What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a UK Government-backed certification scheme designed to protect organisations against the most common cyber attacks. It's overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and administered by accredited Certification Bodies like Cambridge Cyber Security.
The scheme requires you to demonstrate that five key security controls are in place:
Firewalls - protecting your devices and networks from unauthorised access
Secure configuration - ensuring devices and software are set up safely
User access control - limiting access to data and services to those who need it
Malware protection - defending against viruses and malicious software
Security update management - keeping software and devices patched and up to date

Without suitable protection, on average, organisations take over 200 days to detect and contain a data breach, which dramatically increases recovery costs.
Of data breaches are due to human mistakes, often through users that have not had cyber awareness training with attacks such as phishing or social engineering. Many of these are avoidable.
Studies have found that nearly 60% of breaches exploited known vulnerabilities for which a patch was already available but had not been applied in time!
